Angela Wild is a translational specialist in drowning prevention, bridging research, practice and community implementation. Her career includes broad experience within both private swimming schools, public education and non-profits. She owns a boutique swim school in San Diego, Ca, runs a non-profit dedicated to the advancement of aquatics professionals. Angela has an a MA in Motor Learning & Control, and will graduate with her MPH with an emphasis in Community Health Promotion in May. Angela's participation and contribution to local and national water safety organizations include the United States Swim School Association, the California Parks & Recreation Society, the Girls Scouts of America, the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, and the Association of Aquatics Professionals. Angela received the 2022 "Community Lifesaver of the Year" award from the National Drowning Prevention Alliance for her efforts to raise awareness of water safety and drowning prevention strategies, and the 2024 "Educator of the year" award from the United States Swim School Association, an organization dedicated to the advancement of drowning prevention through the collective efforts of over 600 learn to swim business and water safety professionals. Angela serves as an advisory board member for the National Drowning Prevention Alliance and is active in local child safety / injury prevention organizations such as Safe Kids, Children's Safety Network, SAVIR and Safe States.

Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain why certain commonly used water safety terms and phrases (e.g., “water safe,” “drown-proof”) can create confusion or false security among caregivers and the public.
  2. Recognize how common imagery in water-related marketing, social media, and program materials can unintentionally reinforce unsafe assumptions or behaviors, and describe key elements of visuals that support accurate drowning prevention messaging.
  3. Apply simple, beginner-level language and visual reframing strategies to improve the clarity and accuracy of at least one water safety message used in their organization or community outreach.
  4. Identify at least one practical next step for improving messaging alignment within their own organization or community, such as updating a flyer, revising a social media caption, or starting internal conversations about terminology consistency.
